La Crau - A rocky steppe full of life Rocks as far as the eye can see, nothing but rocks. In the French Provence region, near Marseilles and Arles one can find one of the most fascinating landscapes in Europe. The rocky steppe of La Crau may seem boring at first but at closer inspection it turns out to be a giant rock garden that is full of life. The area used to be about 600 square kilometers in size but it has shrunken to a dangerously small size. Damaging developments such as refuse dumps, intensive peach production, and a military airport kept eating into the central areas. Together with the C.E.E.P Euronatur fights for the protection of the remaining 115 square kilometers and for the establishment of wildlife corridors which will connect the area with the adjoining natural and cultural landscapes of the Provence. Apart from the safeguarding of more sites the most important future task is sustainable development planning in order to maintain the traditional, extensive sheep farming systems.
