European Stork Villages

In many European nations, white storks are held to bring luck. A widespread legend has it that the storks deliver babies. But in spite of its cultural significance, the white stork has become rare, or even extinct, in many parts of Europe. The affection people feel for the bird so laden with symbolic meaning has not slowed the destruction of its habitat in European river valleys and floodplains. With certification of "European Stork Villages," EuroNatur hopes to reinforce positive trends in stork conservation. The program demonstrates clearly that even today it is possible to preserve habitat for white storks. To date, nine European communities have received recognition as European Stork Villages.
