Stork conference in Rühstädt opened

Representatives of European stork villages meet in Brandenburg

Radolfzell/Rühstädt. From July 26 to 30 2006, the international conference of the European stork villages takes place in the Brandenburg town of Rühstädt (Prignitz). Around 70 representatives from European stork villages are expected to attend the official reception in the evening. The event is held under the patronage of Matthias Platzeck, premier of Brandenburg.

Since the middle of the nineties, the European Nature Heritage Fund (EuroNatur) gives awards to "European stork villages". Presently there are nine European stork villages, including the German village of Rühstädt in Brandenburg. There is only one award given per country; this requires both an important stork population and an active commitment for the protection of white storks. The aim of the award is to promote the protection of white storks in Europe and to attract the attention of nature-loving tourists.

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of awarding Rühstädt, guest from seven European stork villages in Poland, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia, as well as stork friends from Lithuania, Switzerland, Italy and Turkey visit the event, in order to discuss new strategies for the protection of storks and to exchange experience.

Furthermore, representatives from EuroNatur, the association "Deutsche Umwelthilfe" (aid for environment) and the international association "Artists for Nature" will participate in the conference.
