Sea turtles have lived on our planet for 150 million years, but now they are one of the most threatened types of animals. All of the eight known sea turtle species are in the Red Data Book of endangered species. The last nesting beaches are being destroyed, clutches of eggs are being robbed, and thousands of turtles die on the hooks of fishermen’s long-liners, as bycatch in nets or as a result of plastic refuse floating in the sea. Additionally, many sea turtles are still being caught for eating. The European Nature Heritage Fund engages in protection efforts for these large marine reptiles, particularly in the Mediterranean. On the Greek island of Zakynthos Euronatur has been active for many years in trying to protect the nesting beaches of the Loggerhead sea turtle. This work includes amongst other things: | Support for the national park administration on Zakynthos and political lobbying for the maintenance of Greece’s natural heritage.
| | Cooperation with the Greek organisation working for the protection of sea turtles, i.e. MEDASSET – The Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles.
| | Political lobbying with the European Union for a sustainable fisheries policy, against marine pollution and against large-scale projects which destroy nature. |
