Narew - Poland's Amazon

The Narew floodplain is situated in north-eastern Poland almost at the border to Belarus. The title 'Poland's Amazon' is well deserved - one meander neck follows the other. This paludic valley is more than 40 kilometers long and up to three kilometers wide.  The fact that this paradise was declared a National Park is in part due to EuroNatur's efforts.

Now the emphasis is on winning back areas which were lost as a result of the canalization of some of the river Narew's sections. That is what EuroNatur and its Polish partners are currently working for. The original thinking had been that agriculture would benefit from the canalization. However, meanwhile the farmers have become allies of the conservationists and support the renaturalisation efforts. It became evident that the drained lands were not suited to tillage production but only for low-input meadowing - lucky for the Corncrake which needs these carefully managed types of grasslands. This is a notable example which shows that only farming that works with nature rather than against it does justice to the natural and cultural heritage.
