Northern Sporades - One of the last paradises for Mediterranean monk seals

EuroNatur is of the opinion that the rigorous advancement of sustainable nature-oriented tourism offers great opportunities. 'Green' tourism is particularly suited to making positive connections between tourism, nature conservation, and the maintenance of biodiversity. A particularly successful example of this is the Northern Sporades Marine National Park in the Greek Aegean Sea.

It is there that EuroNatur together with local partner organisations and supported by Daimler-Benz has started a project aiming at reforesting islands and at fostering environmentally acceptable tourism. Concrete measures include nature trails which were recently created on the island of Alonnisos, and which are a novelty in Southern Europe. EuroNatur and its local partners also run a conservation information centre on Alonnisos which is an important port of call for visitors. Together with the local hotels environmental measures are being implemented such as for example the installation of modern efficient solar panels, and the discontinuation of portion packs on breakfast tables.

Apart from the dreamy islands, the major attractions are dolphins and Eleonora's falcons in the Northern Sporades Marine National Park. The Mediterranean monk seals which also live in the National Park and are amongst the most threatened animal species on this planet, are a symbol and a reminder for the need to treat nature with care as an ecological and economic resource.
