Piedmont

Valle delle Rocche is the name of a valley near Turin in the Italian Piedmont region. Huge rock-like loamy cliffs gave the valley its name. The remainders of marine sediments have been shaped by the on-going processes of erosion. The valley is a green corridor with a length of 23 kilometers. Countless birds live here and their loud spring chorus astonishes any visitor. Bee-eaters, Hoopoes and many other species breed in the steep loamy cliffs which are up to 120 meters in height.

On account of the rich bird life the valley is to be integrated into the nature park system as an ecological 'stepping stone'. The Piedmontese municipality of Canale has already developed a nature trail. Canale and the Swabian town of Sersheim have also joined into an environmental town twinning in 1988. The Valle delle Rocche has in the meantime been designated a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive, and the 21 municipalities which adjoin the Rocche area have also committed themselves to giving comprehensive protection to this area.
