Transhumance helps wolves in Spain

EuroNatur also helps protecting the wolves on the Iberian peninsula. 2000 wolves can be found in Spain. The diet of the Spanish and Portuguese wolves differs from that of their eastern European relatives - they consume a higher proportion of domestic animals, mostly cadavers. Every year about 10% of the sheep in a given flock die. If there are less sheep flocks the wolves are forced to go for more of the live animals. For this reason, amongst others, EuroNatur has been very much involved in promoting sheep production and transhumant shepherding in Spain since 1993.
