Unique bird watching in Montenegro
Each year in autumn and spring a unique nature event takes place at the Eastern Coast of the Adriatic Sea. Hundreds of thousands of birds cross over the Balkan peninsula using the Adriatic Flyway – the direct connection from central and north east Europe to the large wetlands in central Africa as the Niger delta. On their way many of them stop at the saltworks at Ulcinij as the best stop over site for water and shore birds at the whole Adriatic East Coast. The Bojana-Buna-Delta in the borderland of Montenegro and Albania is a special site for nature and bird watching in Europe: More than 240 bird species have been seen during the last five years and the area is of global importance for at least 15 bird species. But still guided bird watching tours are rare. In order to protect the site at long sight EuroNatur experts are going to promote the Montenegrin coast and Albania as special sites for nature tourism. With Liberty Bird and Dr. Koch Reisen they have already found two tour operators to include the Bojana-Buna Delta in their programmes. The stop at the Montenegrin coast offers the unique chance to see birds as the Grey Plover from the far North together with Dalmatian Pelican or other mediterranean birds at the same site.
