Stop building frenzy at Lake Ohrid

The unique and rich biodiversity of Lake Ohrid in the border region of Macedonia and Albania is in danger of falling victim to a massive building boom. An alliance of Macedonian NGOs, including EuroNatur partner Front 21/42, now runs a petition to save Lake Ohrid. Please sign the petition, too!

Hotels and residential buildings were mushrooming along the Lake’s coastline already over the past years. Now the local government of the Ohrid district plans to dewater most of the Studenchishte wetlands in order to construct hotels, luxury flats and a marina. The Studenchishte wetlands are one of the last natural filters for the Lake’s water. Losing it would irreversibly destabilise this vulnerable ecosystem.

Lake Ohrid is a true hot spot of biodiversity. It provides ideal habitats for more than 1200 animal and plant species, including endemic species like the Ohrid trout that can be found nowhere else. For these good reasons Lake Ohrid is part of the Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Please help to save the precious nature of Lake Ohrid and sign the petition issued by the NGO alliance.
