Great Egret

1st Prize goes to Bence Máté

Here stands the Great Egret, its feathers translucent in the light of the evening sun. These birds were once close to extinction in Hungary ... and today a good 700 breeding birds are flourishing in the Kiskunság National Park in Hungary alone.

Willow sawfly caterpillars

2nd Prize goes to Konrad Funk

Who wants to sit down to a meal alone? That's what these sawfly caterpillars obviously felt as they gathered on a willow tree in the Saar and their convivial picnic is leaving fascinating patterns in the leaves.

Oystercatcher on patrol

3rd prize for Rainer Förster

Left, right, left, right! Beach patrol on duty in the dunes of Helgoland? Well, no - not if you look closer. This is the oyster catchers's mating ritual. There they go: side by side, with their heads well bent while uttering long piping trills.

Corncrake

4th Prize goes to Bence Máté

"Krek krek!" There are no longer many places in Western Europe where you can hear the strange call of the corncrake. It was with skill, patience and luck that the photographer managed to snap this rare creature “in performance”.

Snowbunting

5th prize is awarded to Erika Poltronieri

Snow and icy cold pose no problem for the snow bunting. In fact the “snow flake” breeds at the most northerly latitudes of any bird world-wide. Its flight is exquisitely captured here.

Lichens in the lime-light

6th prize for João Petronilho

Not, as you might first suppose, the surface of some unknown planet. Lichens of most diverse shades have transformed the bark of this poplar on the Portuguese coast into a brilliant, many-tinted microcosm.

Spring in the air

7th Prize is awarded to Sarah Böhm

Well Mr Fox! Out in the park with time to spare? He seems to relish the scent of the crocuses here. Is even animal life so centred on aesthetic enjoyment and leisure in the capital?

Strange siren

8th prize goes to Roland Bach

Beauty and danger: in vibrant red and purple shades this mauve stinger drifts through the Mediterranean in magic contrast with the blue of the waters. Enjoy its iridescent beauty from a certain distance as on closer acquaintance it is poisonous!

Wild for fish

9th prize for Bence Máté

To be able to photograph this dazzling confusion of jabbing beaks the photographer constructed a catamaran with a built-in camera on Lake Kerkini in Greece. This was the only way to capture underwater pictures of the Dalmatian pelicans in the throes of the “fish-hunt”.

Stag beetle

10th prize is awarded to Christian Fröbe

To catch the moment when the largest beetle native to Germany prepares itself to fly is a rare achievement: the stag beetle runs up the branch, opens up its wing-cases, takes a few little dance steps to spread out its wings to the full – and all clear for take off!

Young stag

11th prize goes to Ryszard Adamus

Silent encounter at dawn: who are you? What are you doing on my territory? It's a red deer and the young stag's eyes seem to show a mixture of scepticism and curiosity as he spies the photographer crouched down in the frosted grasses of the meadow.

A curtain of birds

12th prize for Robert Waleczek

Thousands of birds rise up into the sky. It's as if a fine curtain woven with their dark silhouettes were drawn across the first light of morning.  This dramatic spectacle on the coast of Sylt was produced by a flock of bar-tailed godwits off on their travels.
