Resistance Against Construction of Airport in Albania

Despite constant pressure from national and international NGOs, the Albanian government is sticking to the construction of a major airport near Vlora – in the middle of the Narta lagoon, one of the most important resting areas for birds who take shelter when migrating. NGOs as well as Albanian environmental experts strongly critisise the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the construction project.

For years, the issue of the ownership of the Ulcinj Salina remained unresolved. Today, the Privatisation Council in Montenegro unanimously decided to return the Ulcinj Salina to state ownership. A major hindrance to nature conservation measures at the salt pans has thus been removed.

So, every year in the EU about 1.5 million water birds are saved from completely unnecessary death from lead poisoning. EuroNatur and its partner organisations from all over Europe have been campaigning hard for this ban.
