International Day of Action for Rivers: Spotlight on Montenegro’s threatened Komarnica Canyon

On 14 March, International Day of Action for Rivers, the documentary "Komarnica: The Wild That Remains" will premiere. An exclusive pre-screening webinar on 12 March will offer an early look, while a growing petition continues to rally international support for the protection of the Komarnica River.

The Komarnica River in Montenegro is one of Europe’s last wild rivers. It is a unique biodiversity hotspot in the Western Balkans, with untouched canyon ecosystems home to rare and endemic species. Nationally, it is already protected as a Nature Park and Natural Monument.

Plans to build the 172-megawatt “Komarnica” Hydropower Plant have therefore triggered strong opposition from international scientists, legal experts and NGOs, who warn of irreversible environmental damage and urge Montenegro’s authorities to immediately halt the project. Despite growing pressure, the project has only been postponed, not cancelled, leaving the canyon’s future uncertain. The controversy has even reached Montenegro’s EU accession negotiations. Thomas Waitz MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to Montenegro, has stressed that protecting the Komarnica River is essential for closing Chapter 27 on environment.

Meanwhile, local resistance continues to grow. The “Save Komarnica” initiative launched by the Montenegrin Ecologists Society and supported by EuroNatur, is mobilising citizens, NGOs, and international supporters. An ongoing petition is gathering signatures for the protection of Komarnica Canyon.
To mark the International Day of Action for Rivers, WildReach Production’s award-winning filmmakers will premiere Komarnica: The Wild That Remains on March 14, 2026, presenting a powerful story of science and activism defending one of Europe’s last wild river canyons. There is an exclusive pre-screening on 12 March at 5 pm CET. Registration is free and now open.

“The Komarnica canyon is a rare wild treasure in Europe. This film beautifully illustrates why protecting rivers like Komarnica matters, and we hope it inspires even more people to stand up for it,” says Dr Amelie Huber, Fresh Water Project Manager at EuroNatur.
