Unspoilt rivers in the Balkans: The Blue Heart of Europe

For around 15 years, EuroNatur has been working alongside national and international partners as part of the ‘Save the Blue Heart of Europe’ campaign to protect the river landscapes of the Balkans from destruction caused by construction of hydroelectric power stations. On Wednesday, 15 April 2026 at 6 pm, EuroNatur invites you to an online talk on the Blue Heart of Europe. Take the opportunity to learn more about South-Eastern Europe’s wild rivers from head of programme Annette Spangenberg. Feel free to ask questions and exchange views with other participants.

The online event will take place via Microsoft Teams. We recommend joining via a laptop or a desktop computer. If you wish to join using a smartphone or tablet, you will need to install the Microsoft Teams app in advance. Once you have registered, you will receive an automatic e-mail confirmation. It will contain the link to join the event.

We are protecting Europe's last free flowing riversTo get you in the mood: the impressive short documentary ‘Komarnica – The Wild That Remains’

The Komarnica River in Montenegro is one of Europe’s last wild rivers. It is a unique biodiversity hotspot in the Western Balkans, featuring pristine canyon ecosystems that are home to rare and endemic species. At national level, it is already protected as a nature park and a natural monument.

Plans to build the 172-megawatt hydroelectric power station ‘Komarnica’ have therefore sparked strong opposition from international scientists, legal experts and NGOs. They warn of irreversible environmental damage and are calling on the Montenegrin authorities to halt the project immediately. Despite the growing pressure, however, the project has only been postponed, not cancelled – the future of the canyon remains uncertain.
