Updates on our bear projects

New format for project report

Dear bear friends,

From now on our project report on brown bears will be paperless in a digital format. This has several advantages: we can pass on the latest developments on our bear projects more quickly and keep you updated this way. In addition, the digital format allows for videos, picture galleries and more. So please check out this page every now and again.

A short note on how it works: clicking on the “+” Symbol next to the title will open a box with a short description of the topic and a link to an interesting article or a short video. Trees for bears

In summer 2025, devastating forest fires destroyed about 11,000 hectares of forest in the province of León in the Northwest of Spain, including important brown bear habitats. Thanks to your support, we and our Spanish partner organisation Fapas were able to plant 223 fruit trees for the bears of the region, lighting a beacon of hope in the Cantabrian Mountains. The trees were planted under the slogan “trees for bears” as part of our Giving Tuesday campaign. EuroNatur project manager Antje Henkelmann has a thank you message for you.

Bora the bear on the move

Sling traps are a big threat for brown bears in some regions in the Balkans, even though they are set up for other animals such as boars. Again and again, bears die after being caught in these illegal traps. But sometimes they can be saved in time; the female bear Bora in Albania is one such case with a happy ending. Ever since, her journey has been providing our partner organisation PPNEA with important insights. Read the full story here…

Launch of an ambitious bear protection project

The Dinaric-Pindos range in the Western Balkans is the habitat of one of the last large bear populations of Europe, about 4,000 animals. To secure their survival in the long run, a new ambitious nature conservation project launched in 2026: “LIFE DinPin Bear”. Coordinated by EuroNatur, the project and brings together 20 NGOs and government agencies from nine countries in the Balkans. Learn more…

A peaceful coexistence for bears and beekeepers

As you know, we usually do cross-border work. In this case, however, we have constructed a border: an electric fence. With the help of EuroNatur, our partners at the “Centar za životnu sredinu” (Centre for Environment in Bosnia-Herzegovina) have installed electric fences in order to protect the local beehives from bears. This also protects the bears: If they cannot damage the beekeepers’ property, they are safe from their anger and retribution.
