Offspring of rare Balkan Lynx proven in Albania

Scientists managed to prove successful reproduction of the Balkan Lynx in Albania, and thus a second population of this subspecies of Eurasian Lynx. Last week a young lynx was found dead in the Munella Mountains. There is no doubt that the animal was born in this region.

Rarest Cat on Earth Finally Included in the Red List

Is there a reason for joy, when a species appears on the Red List? In this case, yes. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) acknowledged the Balkan Lynx as a distinct subspecies of the Eurasian Lynx and subsequently classified it as ‘critically endangered’.

Nearly 100,000 against dams in Mavrovo National Park

One of Europe‘s oldest national parks shall remain free of new dams. Until yesterday 97,804 people signed a letter of protest against two projected hydropower plants inside the Mavrovo National Park in Macedonia. Today, the petition was handed over to the Macedonian Prime Minister Nicola Gruevski. This action was part of the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign.

Albania decides to ban all hunting throughout the whole country for two years. This initiative was announced already two weeks ago by the Albanian Minister of the Environment Lefter Koka. Recently it was communicated to the public that the Parliament now passed this moratorium on hunting.
