Hope for Ulcinj Salina

Will the years of campaigning by EuroNatur and its partners for the placing under protection of Ulcinj Salina finally be rewarded? During the international conference, the minister responsible in the Montenegrin government confirmed the setting up of a nature reserve.

Bird Paradise in the eastern Adriatic: Ulcinj Salina

Ulcinj Salina is one of the most important resting places for migrant birds in the eastern Adriatic. In order to protect the area, EuroNatur and its local partner organisations organised the 4th International Salina Conference on 18th April 2018, in which more than 80 delegates, amongst them leading politicians, took part.

The Montenegrin minister for Sustainable Development and Tourism, Pavle Radulović, declared at the conference that the government of his country had approved the recommendation for the protection of the saltpans, and had drawn up a clear route map for the protection of the area. According to the minister’s statement, it is proposed to set up a nature reserve over the whole area of Ulcinj Salina (protected area according to IUCN category V), to restore both the salt production and the ecological viability of the area, and to run the nature reserve efficiently.

Thus, the long story of empty commitments and unkept promises around the protection of the Salina may finally have reached a happy ending. The organisers of the conference welcomed the clear promise of the minister, and, as soon as the saltpans enjoy a secure protected status, have committed themselves to supporting ecological restoration and salt exploitation. Until that point, EuroNatur and its partners will be following the next steps of the Montenegrin government with vigilance. In this spirit, a jointly drafted letter, with a summary of the outcome of the conference, has already been sent to Pavle Radulović.
