The confluence of the Sava and Krka rivers in Slovenia. This area is specially important for endagered fish species.
© Marko ZupančičGood news from the Sava: Our appeal against the building of the hydropower plant Mokrice at the Slovenian-Croatian border was successful. The Slovenian administrative court has declared the current environmental compatibility decree as invalid due to procedural errors. That means, that the project won’t be allowed to be implemented for the time being. The result of a study of the fish population that was conducted in the area of the planned hydropower plant was essential for the verdict. Experts were able to prove that certain river sections in Sava and Krka affected by the hydropower plant function as important spawning ground for the pigo (a species protected by EU-law). EuroNatur was able to make the study possible through donations last year.
“Unfortunately the hydropower plant is not yet off the table completely, but we achieved another delay of the project that is causing the construction company already great issues. Time is working for us, since the costs for the hydropower plant are increasing every day that there is no construction,” says Theresa Schiller, who coordinates the campaign “Save the Blue Heart of Europe” at EuroNatur.
