Hydropower plant in Romania: Successful court case, but construction continues

Positive court ruling, yet no reason to celebrate: Construction works for the hydropower plant at the Jiu River will continue. The Romanian environmental protection agency had filed a complaint against the environmentally destructive project following pressure by committed nature conservationists. In turn, the state-owned project operator Hidroelectrica filed a lawsuit. The Romanian court of appeals now rejected the lawsuit – however, construction works won’t be stopped.

Romanian natural treasure threatened by hydropower project

EuroNatur and its partner organisations run the campaigns “SaveParadiseForests” and “Save the Blue Heart of Europe” to save the river and forest gems of the Balkans from destruction. The Jiu, a wild river in the Carpathians of Romania, is among the rivers threatened by hydropower plants. EuroNatur is now joining the struggle to prevent it from being dammed.

Extension of Primeval Beech Forests World Heritage Site: Great Success for Dedicated Efforts

For several years, ten European countries and a number of nature conservation NGOs, including EuroNatur, had been jointly working towards the inclusion of old-growth beech forests in the list of World Natural Heritage sites. Last Friday, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at its yearly session decided to add 63 beech forests in ten European countries to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
